Interview with Spencer and Lloyd in December Issue of FILMINK MAGAZINE about 'THE GIFT' and FLICKERFEST

'"Flickerfest is the one you want to be in," writer/director, Lloyd Harvey, tells Filmink. "It's one of those coveted festivals where you know that you're in a good place if you get screened there". On a calendar busting with events calling for submissions, Flickerfest still claims prime position as Australia's premiere short film festival, and the place to go to see the most exciting up-and-coming talent, especially of the local variety. And, as of last year, the Australian competition catagory is now Oscar-accredited, along with its already accredited International competition. It's a timely endorsement for the festival, which has again assembled a terrific showcase of local shorts for 2014. One of those films is Lloyd Harvey's 'The Gift', a touching short about a young man with cerebral palsy (Harry Greenwood), whose birthday wish is to lose his virginity, but who must overcome his mother's reservations first..."

FILM INK MAGAZINE - 'SWEET SIXTEEN'

"FilmInk speaks to co-writers, directors and siblings, Lloyd and Spencer Harvey, about crafting their deeply moving short ‘The Gift’ about a young man’s sexual awakening.

“We were on one of our ‘please-nature-swat-us-with-an-idea-for-a-story’ walks and we started talking about romance. ‘Let’s tell a love story!’ we said. So we started to talk about falling in love for the first time and that all-important, all exciting and yet completely frightening leap into sex,” explains directing duo Lloyd and Spencer Harvey (pictured) of their latest short, the deeply affecting The Gift. Following an international premiere at the Palm Springs ShortFest, the film is set to screen at the Melbourne International Film Festival on August 1...”

SX MAGAZINE EDITORIAL - READY AND ABLE

"Disability and sex work intersect in an exciting new short from Lloyd and Spencer Harvey, writes Garrett Bithell. What would you do if your son asked to lose his virginity for his birthday? This is the dilemma explored in the latest short film by award-winning brother and sister writer/director duo, Lloyd and Spencer Harvey, The Gift.

Centred on Charlie, who has cerebral palsy, the film is set on the night of his 18th birthday as the family waits for his ‘gift’ to arrive. Disability and sex work are about to collide, and we follow a brave family for whom this rite of passage is wrought with more complications than usual. “As a brother and sister team, we’ve always been very interested in the family dynamic and breaking down the individual roles. Coming of age in a family setting is always a transition for everyone, especially as parents adapt to their changing role within their children’s lives,” Lloyd tells SX. 'We were very interested in seeing the shift in the family dynamic and in particular the shift in the mother’s role when confronted more intimately with their child’s sexual awakening...'"

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH

"Short Australian film THE GIFT is a big hit worldwide!

THE Gift is the little Aussie film that could.

The little-known independent local movie starring Hugo Weaving's son, Harry Greenwood, is one of the hottest tickets on the international short-film circuit. And it was made on a budget of less than $10,000, pretty much what we'd expect the cast and crew of Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby to spend on lunch. Created by brother and sister team Lloyd and Spencer Harvey, who have already won several awards for previous works, The Gift also stars Anne Tenney (The Castle and Always Greener), Mark Lee (Gallipoli), Hannah Marshall and Ben Mingay...."
