THE POETRY SERIES

This is an ongoing photographic series titled “The Poetry Series”. Each artwork has a stanza number and is accompanied by a poem written by Spencer and Lloyd in tribute to the artwork. “A Book of Poetry: Volume I” includes the first 13 stanzas and is limitedly available. Artworks from the series have been exhibited in the National Portrait Prize and included in the semi-finals of the Moran Photographic Portrait Prize.

24. The Guest

My gaze first fell upon her hair
Red like a flame twice flared
She whispered to me of mournings
And I suspect they were now warnings
But I never was quite prepared

My gaze then fell upon her eyes
Dark like pools and ever so wise
But then something was also missing
Perhaps lost in her own reminiscing
A truth never said just implied

My gaze then fell upon her toes
White like clay in pointed hose
At the sight, I was struck, I was shaken
Her feet off the floor, was I mistaken?
I’d have left but I’d already froze

23. The Game

Hush, don’t fret, the wait will go quick
Before long we’ll hear that fateful click
New friends will come to play with us
But they won’t resist or make a fuss

For we are the smarter players
We'll let them finish their prayers
Winning is fun when the game is fair
But we both know, odds favour this pair
